It's another Fruity Week around here!

Here's what's on the menu for this week. Lots of salads and even more fruit.

Ice cold watermelon with just a scattering of sea salt.

A whole box of apricots. I like to slice them and toss with some raspberries in a bowl of Greek yogurt. When they are really ripe, hubby smashes them and spreads on a slice of sourdough toast. Also very good to substitute peaches for the apricots, but the peaches at the market were hard a rock so passed on those for now. I have a hard time getting enough protein anyhow, as I am not a big meat eater, but this time of year when it is so hot, even a harder time. So we have been making lots of protein smoothies, with blueberries, and bananas. I am overdosing on fruit this time of summer, but I guess there are worse things.

The Train, The Train

Saturday dawned bright, but not quite so hot, it was in the low 80's with a nice breeze. We headed out to Starbucks, then the train station about 20 minutes from home. We got to be part of a volunteer team for testing the new light rail system before it opens. Everyone was so excited, you'd have thought we were little kids going to have the Thomas the Tank Engine experience. Hubster remained composed, but he did say he enjoyed the "new train" smell. A good time was had by all, new friends made, e-mails exchanged for sending photos.

Here comes the train

Our driver

Waiting to board for the return trip. Look at those lovely clouds.

Upon return to the station. Me and Murph, with Janet in the reflection. Actually we are reflected too. Does this photo make our butts look big?

Quiet,calm, peaceful, everyone has gone.

Beautiful Skies, Too Hot to Cook

I don't have much of an appetite when it is so hot, and certainly don't feel like cooking. Here's last nights dinner. Cottage cheese, with berries, grapes and figs. Added some rye toast and a tall glass of iced tea. Light but very satisfying.

Driving home yesterday afternoon, the clouds were so gorgeous, over this field, freshly mown and rolled up bales of hay. Hmmmm...do they still call them bales, now that they are actually "rolls". I dunno.

Sunset, MoonRise, Fireworks

It was this hot when we headed out to the golf course where we planned to watch the fireworks. I think we broke another record today.

Sunset over the golf course.

And behind us the moon.

I've been lying low the past couple of weeks, due to the heat. Out early in the a.m. to run errands and do what absolutely has to be done, then into the cozy cool for the afternoon. The Hubster was getting tired of me being a house mouse, so convinced me to go out for the Fireworks. Sick of talking about weather, but gee whiz, we had triple digits almost all month of June and July has started out the same. Yes, it is HOT in Texas, I know that. But we have broken so many all time records. One of the days the weather dude says that the last time it was this hot on this day in June was 1954. Hubster was born in June 1954 right here in this town. I looked at him and said "hmmmm, that explains a lot, your little brain was cooked" We met up with some of his pals from the golf course to watch the fireworks.
I recorded the Boston Pops while we were gone so came home and watched it. It was spectacular. Those folks in Boston were wearing long sleeves and some had jackets on.

Bikers on Parade

Hot Time In The Old Town

This time of year in Texas it does feel like we live on the face of the sun. Or as one of the DJs on my favorite radio station said this morning, something to the effect of, "Cool Texas breeze, 75 degrees, then the sun comes up and we're screwed"! UGH, I do hate the heat. In spite of it, I did have a pretty great week-end with the hubster. This was the week-end of the Republic of Texas rally, and we love to see/hear the bikers roll into town. A lot of festivities going on and a lot of beautiful bikes to look at. There is not a lot that will get me out of the house when we have triple digits, but the combo of the ROT rally, and having a 50% coupon at the craft store. Woo Hoo.

Adjusting to Impending Summer

I'm hot, I'm tired, I'm cranky and depressed! There, that is my usual state around this time of year. Sounds pleasant doesn't it? When it starts to get hot, I go into a downward spiral that lasts for the entire summer. I've tried many different things to ward it off, but no amount of planning or making ready for it, stops it. It is like a creeping malaise. Once the temps start to hover in the 90's I start feeling sluggish and get the blues in a bad way. I start hibernating inside where it is air conditioned. I don't want to go to a single outdoor event, even if it is something I normally would be delighted in, I beg off because of the discomfort I know the heat will cause me. This year I was certain I could avoid it. I did different things this time. While it was still cool, I cleaned and organized the garage, and located my art supplies that I wanted ready for this time. I bought new art supplies. I started not one but two blogs. There, I said, that will keep me occupied and getting things done so summer won't seem so long. I will be productive as that always makes me feel better. Well, part of the groundwork is laid, but I feel like it was just another false start. I just can't get motivated. So here I sit, trying to come up with something sweet and happy to say, and all I want to do is take a nap! Ugh!
